The story of Amsterdam

The church was built in the second part of the 13th century. This is the oldest building in Amsterdam that still stands today. It is located at Oudekerksplein and directly across from the church are windows that are used for prostitution.

Oude kerk

The church is situated at Prinsengracht 279-281 on the Westermarkt, behind the Homomonument. It was built between 1621 and 1631. Since 2004, the church has been part of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands.

Westerkerk

The Netherlands’ most visited museum on Museumplein is dedicated to the artworks of the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. It was founded in 1962, but the museum didn’t open until 1973. Vincent van Gogh sold only two artworks during his lifetime.

Established in 1798, it is located between Stadhouderskade and Museumplein. The Rijksmuseum’s collection provides an overview of Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages to the present day, featuring artworks by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals.

A typical working-class neighborhood that originated in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the Jordaan became an overcrowded and rough area. Later in the 19th century, the somewhat more affluent people replaced the old houses with newer working-class homes. The name “Jordaan” is derived from the French word “Jardin” which means garden.

Amsterdam has more bicycles than residents. Amsterdam has 850,000 residents and there are 1.3 million bicycles in the city. Over 15,000 bicycles are fished out of the canals annually. Cycling is the cheapest and easiest mode of transportation in Amsterdam.

When the canals were still used for cargo transport, living on a houseboat was considered a sign of poverty. Since the canals are no longer used for this purpose, warehouses have been converted into residential homes. The oldest houseboat is located at Prinsengracht 1049.

The house at Singel 7 is known as the narrowest house in the world. The house is only 1 meter wide. Nowadays, it is no longer a house, but a storage space.

The Mayor’s Residence (official residence) is located at Herengracht 502. The house was built in 1672 and became the official residence in 1927. Our current mayor is Femke Halsema.
